Pastor Lee and Gidget AtheyThe Widow's Mite

Mark 12 The Widow's Mite

41 Jesus sat down near the collection box in the Temple and watched as the crowds dropped in their money. Many rich people put in large amounts. 42 Then a poor widow came and dropped in two small coins. 43 Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I tell you the truth, this poor widow has given more than all the others who are making contributions. 44 For they gave a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she had to live on.”

This story for whatever reason always touches my heart. At times, I have wondered why Jesus didn’t stop the widow and take her two coins and turn them into 100 coins that day.

Here is a poor woman whose husband is dead and is now giving everything she has left to live on. She was giving to the temple at a time when the temple priest were corrupt. Think about that for a second. But the temple was not her responsibility. She was giving what she had to God.

The widow was giving in faith to God. Just like the widow of Zarephath, who gave her last meal to Elijah. Does that mean the widow went home and had her last meal and died of starvation?

I don’t think so. We don’t know the rest of her story, but I can tell you Jesus saw what she gave that day and my faith tells me that God met her need. Just as God took care of a widow and her son in Elijah’s day, I believe God took care of this widow.

During this pandemic, we all have had to operate in faith. There is no certainty about what will happen tomorrow. What we know is there is no certainty about our health or our finances during a pandemic. So we have to operate in faith just like this poor widow woman and put all we have in God’s hands and believe that He will take care of us.

Let us pray!
