Pastor Lee and Gidget Athey God is Our Shield

I am going to go old school on you today. There is a song we sang in church years ago called MY GLORY AND THE LIFTER OF MY HEAD.
Love Letters from God
Maybe if I give you a few words you will remember it.

My glory and The lifter of my head (3x)
But thou, O Lord Are a shield for me
My Glory and The lifter of my head
I cried unto the Lord With my voice (3x)
And he heard me out Of His holy hill

Those words were originally spoken by King David in one of the darkest times of his life. His son, Absalom, had put together a large following of people who were disgruntled and was marching against his father to take over his kingdom.

David in disgrace had to flee from Jerusalem and go into hiding. Not only does David feel the weight of his son and his kingdom against him; but their cry is God will not save him now.

So in Psalm 3:3-4 David makes this great declaration:

3 But thou, O Lord, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head. 4 I cried unto the Lord with my voice, and he heard me out of his holy hill. Selah.

David states three truths about God that He is standing on in the middle of his dark hour.

#1 God is our “Shield” a symbol of God’s protection.

#2 God is our “Glory”. Even though David’s outward honor and glory as king was gone, even though he had had to flee in his own kingdom, he knew God was his true glory.

#3 He is “Lifter of my head”. David was emotionally drained but He found his hope and encouragement in his walk with God. He saw God could lift his countenance.

May we remember today that God is our shield, our glory, and the lifter of our heads.

Let us pray!

Blessings,

Pastor Lee & Gidget Athey
